altOnly the Camera Obscura could top their tree with a mini plasma dome!

If you’re going to be in Edinburgh during December then you should definitely go and check out all the festive activities happening at the much loved Camera Obscura and World of Illusions. Kirsty, Siobhan, and I were lucky enough to be invited last week to chat about all the festive offerings (and to try out a few of the ‘illusions’ for ourselves!).

The team over at the Camera are very excited about participating in the Decorate Edinburgh Christmas tree campaign  to raise money for Cash for Kids,  Sunflower Garden, and Edinburgh Clothing Store. The trees are all being supplied by the Bethany Christian Trust and will be decorated by various businesses across the city. The aim is to spread Christmassy cheer from Edinburgh’s top right down to its toes and the Camera Obscura team are full of plans to make their tree as magical and jolly as can be!  To appreciate their decorating skills and to discover parts of Edinburgh slightly off the beaten track try following the Christmas tree trail. Pick up a map from any of Edinburgh’s Christmas box offices to start.

Besides the beautiful Christmas tree there are all the usual amazing illusions the Camera has to offer, not to forget the camera obscura itself! We all had a lot of fun seeing the little people walking around the Mile - it was like being the witch in The Wizard of Oz, watching Dorothy in her magic crystal ball! There were also rumours of a new Christmas thaumatrope activity for families, so keep your eyes peeled for that. I think there's also a lovely blue Christmas mascot in need of a name.

The girls and I had a great time exploring, though we did find the infinity tunnel a bit much to handle! You can see some souvenirs of our escapades here...
