The secret gardens of the Royal Mile are proving to be Edinburgh's latest tourist attraction.

The gardens, which are tucked away behind the street's high tenements, have been described as Edinburgh's "hidden jewels".

The Royal Mile's gardens provide an unusual insight into the history of one of Scotland's most famous streets.

A walking tour of the gardens has proved a hit with visitors and locals who had no idea the gardens existed.

Jean Bareham, the organiser behind the Greenyonders Tours, said: "There are such a lot of hidden green gems behind these historic buildings and I thought visitors would like to see them.

"I am also discovering Edinburgh people like to see them as well because we don't always look behind these buildings."
