We’d like to be able to say that ‘summer is coming’, however with recent week’s weather it’s hard to say which season we’re in! Let’s be honest – Scotland isn’t exactly famed for its clear blue skies and scorching heat! So let’s just say June, July and August are coming, which in Edinburgh means much more than weather. It means atmosphere. It means the streets being packed by tourists, it means ‘taps aff’ if the sun decides to show its face. And it means the Fringe Festival, which every Edinburgh native loves to moan about but secretly love it as much as everyone else.

Why should you visit Edinburgh this summer? Here’s why:

1. Food and Drink

With this being Scotland’s year of Food and Drink, it makes more reason than ever to visit the capital to sample some of the treats we have to offer. We’re not just talking about your traditional Scottish food like haggis and neeps, we’re talking about a modern, contemporary twist on great Scottish cuisine. Amazing restaurants such as The Witchery and the lovely vegetarian eatery David Bann, and Cranachan & Crowdie, the fantastic fine Scottish food and drink deli on the Royal Mile.

2. Culture

The history, art and atmosphere of Scotland’s capital come together to create a rich and vibrant culture which is only heightened in the summer months with the array of events and festivals. Edinburgh’s feel in the summer months cannot be matched, with traditions from all over the world making the city one huge hub of activity.

3. Attractions

Of course in Edinburgh we’ve always got the classic attractions. The Castle, Edinburgh Dungeons, Camera Obscura, Dynamic Earth and Mary King’s Close provide entertainment (and in some cases a massive fright) all year round.

4. Festivals

This couldn’t be a blog post about Edinburgh in the summer time without mentioning the festivals. But it’s not just the world famous Fringe – Edinburgh is “the world’s leading festival city”. We’ve got the International Film Festival, the Jazz and Blues Festival and the International Book Festival too.

5. Golf

Scotland has 578 golf courses. Yes. Five hundred and seventy eight. Edinburgh has 67 of these 578. With the 144th British Golf Open being at the beautiful St. Andrews this year, there’s no better reason to stay in Edinburgh and explore.
