The West End is a beautiful and lively part of Edinburgh, here are just a few reasons why we love it!

1.  Unique boutiques

Edinburgh’s West End is full of hidden gems, which even locals might not be aware of. These streets hide some of Edinburgh’s most luxurious boutiques, which sell beautiful items; from fashionable clothes to local art. One of our favourites includes Helen Bateman Scotland on Williams Street, designing one of a kind shoes and accessories.

Last Sunday was my perfect Sunday in Edinburgh - why?  Myself and my better half had a lovely day of serenity, sunshine, new tastes and great wine and chips all in one perfect afternoon in Edinburgh.

Botanics3small

We started with a sublime stroll through The Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh. They look simply wonderful at this time of year.  My favourite landscape (and there are so many) on this particular day was the Scottish Heath Garden and Native tree trail. So pretty but also informative and the info next to the plants fed my interest in native plants and their many uses, such as for medicinal purposes.

We then walked from the gardens to the Stockbridge Market.  After a lovely loose Earl Grey Tea from Steampunk Coffee we walked round the stalls. So much choice and great quality on offer. Following this we ambled up to sample Stockfest - a week long festival celebrating the village of Stockbridge - its still on (20th - 27th September) if you want to pop by.

We sampled some devine Chocolates from Ocelot Chocolates.  So good we are considering supplying them to our lucky guests!

After picking up some dog biscuits from Gourmet Dog Treats for our pampered pooch we got ingredients for our tea.  Wild mushrooms for our pasta and..... luxurious truffle oil from Bonny Vita.

All this shopping and strolling left us a bit peckish so we popped into The Scran and Scallie for what we consider to be some of the most delicious chips in the city!  Washed down with a cool Picpoul de Pinet for me and a Style of Scotland Beer flight for the husband.  All served with a smile and charm from the friendly waiter.

If only all Sundays were so perfect.

The closest apartments to The Royal Botanic Gardens and Stockbridge are New Town Boutique, New Town Chic and Stockbridge Grandeur at only minutes walk.

Neel has become a YouTube sensation posting his observations of modern life in short yet hilarious videos. He is performing at Assembly Hall. Follow Neel at @NeelKolhatkar

AnnaAnna: I am looking forward to seeing Brazouka next month at Assembly Hall, I love dance and this show looks like it will have a little bit of everything. It’s directed by Arlene Phillips and has some well-known faces starring. Follow the show at @BrazoukaLive

SiobhanSiobhan: The Amazing Bubble Man is sure to be a hit with the kids and me (!). We’re booked in to see him at The Assembly Rooms in August. He’s had shows at the Festival for years and is always a hit. You can find The Amazing Bubble Man on Facebook.

Classic Marchmont Charm bedroom, Edinburgh

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet - a long standing member of The Edinburgh Address portfolio has had a name change. Begone 'The Gatekeeper's Cottage @ Blacket Estate' and welcome in 'Family Retreat @ Arthur's Seat'. We felt this name gave a better idea of the lovely family vibe of this great apartment and noted its great location very close to the famous landmark. You can enjoy all the comfort of home and then wander over to explore and check out the amazing view of the city from the top.

Family Retreat @ Arthur's Seatalt

This apartment will also now be accepting friends of the well-behaved canine variety. Pets can enjoy the lovely outdoor patio space as well; as long as they don't get under everyone's feet should you decided to make use of the BBQ!

Set Fire to the Stars –

I'm going to watch 'Set Fire to the Stars' and hang out with Elijah wood. I should be saying it's because I'm a massive fan of Dylan Thomas but the real reason is my soft spot for Elijah!

It's 1950s New York and Dylan Thomas wrestles with his demons. This beautiful black and white semi-biographical drama celebrates the poet's centenary, taking place in a single week in the U.S as the poet prepares for a series of readings. Celyn Jones stars as Thomas with Elijah Wood as John Malcolm Brinnin while the original score is by Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals fame. This is an affecting and playful insight into the life of one of our best loved poets.

Still Life –

I'll be going to see 'Still Life' because I've seen Eddie Marsan in a few other things and he's always great.

This is a heartfelt story about loving, living, and what comes after. John May (Eddie Marsan) is an obsessively perfectionist council worker who spends his days finding the families of people who have died alone. The downsizing of his department means that he must up the ante on his last case and begins a journey which will free him to finally begin living his life fully. Wonderful acting makes this offering from Uberto Pasolini (Machan) both charming and with hidden depths.

Garnet's Gold –

I'm looking forward to seeing 'Garnet's Gold' because I'm a big fan of documentary film making; especially any that include journeys and beautiful landscapes!

This is the real story of Garnet Frost; a dreamer in his middle age who is devoted to his mother and enjoys singing old show tunes in pubs. In the company of some friends he sets off on an adventure to the Highlands to find gold sent in support of Bonnie Prince Charlie. This is a charming documentary about a quixotic journey and the unusual man of independent spirit who undertakes it.

The House of Magic –

Going to see this one with the kids; they love 3d films and this one looks like it's full of excitement and a cast of great characters. The kids will really enjoy it!

One cat sets out to save the day from a magician's evil nephew. Abandoned by his owner, Thunder the cat finds refuge in the house of an old magician. The house is chock-a-block with gadgets, eccentric inventions, and a host of new friends. Everyone welcomes him except Jack Rabbit who is jealous. With the magician ending up in hospital and his evil nephew trying to sell the house and put his uncle in a home, Thunder must unite the household and save the house before it is too late.

City Centre Haven @ York Place

There are hundreds more films to choose from and we've all got about 10 more we'd love to get a chance to see. The reel of tickets might end up extending down the hall...It's really worth coming to Edinburgh for a visit to catch a few films and enjoy the sun while it's here. Take a look at our apartments to start planning your weekend :-)

Rocpool Apartment @ Grosvenor Crescent 2

Rocpool Apartment @ Grosvenor Crescent 2            Rocpool Apartment @ Grosvenor Apartment 1A

The Rocpool Apartments are really something. With beautiful attention to detail in their fabulous interiors and within easy reach of so many gems in the West End, they make the perfect place to stay for a city break. The West End is home to lots of Edinburgh's independent businesses and boutiques and some delicious local restaurants; we've selected some of our favourites to get you started!

Shop

Studio 1 has so many good things! For all things homey and decorative this is the place to go. Recent purchases include a moomintroll angelspiel and hand-made coloured wineglasses but there are also lights, candles, toys, baking tools, and countless other things on offer. It also happens to be right next to Paper Tiger for beautifully quirky stationary and paper ephemera. Definitely the place to come for a last minute gift! Frontiers is on the other side for beautiful unique clothing and accessories, or take a walk down nearby William Street for lots of lovely little boutiques. Frasers is also a five minute walk away for those looking for big brands and designers. Shopping heaven...

Snack

Loudons is the place to go. All goods are freshly baked on the premises; you can see the work in progress through a clever little corner window, there's something really satisfying about seeing the delicious things you're about to eat being made from only handfuls of flour and eggs before your very eyes. The cakes are incredible and there are many suitable for coeliacs and those with wheat or dairy intolerances; as Marie Antoinette once said, "let them eat cake". The weekend brunch menu is equally good with lots of delicious options and all coffee is from Artisan Roast - arguably the best available in Edinburgh. With all of this, what's not to like?

Relax

There's one nearby which really takes the biscuit. Chamomile Sanctuary has so much on offer with lots of packages to cover everything. You can be pampered from top to toe or really focus on one area for fast beauty essentials. There are some aromatherapy sessions available which sound absolutely heavenly; the Ultimate Aromatherapy Experience is calling...

Feast

We had a hard time choosing what to feature for dinner; you really are spoiled for choice! In the end we settled on the following; Chop Chop on Morrison Street for an authentic Chinese sharing meal and proud recipient of an AA Rosette; Edinburgh Larder's "Scottish landscape on a plate", using the best of local produce to create deliciously ethical dishes; and La P'tite Folie for unbeatable traditional French food and a very reasonable lunch offer of two courses for £11.50 (Kir Royal is only £5.25 as an added bonus). Le De-Vin is right next door as well so once dinner is finished you can gracefully migrate to enjoy a sophisticated glass of wine and conversation.

So there you have it, The Edinburgh Address West End picks. Why not book one of our apartments and try out the above for yourself?
