Escape the ordinary to your very own 15th century Scottish Castle. This beautifully restored historic property is enveloped in a leafy and tranquil countryside landscape. The main part of the castle blends elements of maximalism, comfort and historic charm.

This secluded luxury and wellness retreat can be hired on an exclusive use basis, the perfect location for celebrating and relaxing with family and friends, weddings, corporate events and more.

There’s room for up to 14 people in 7 bedrooms, with some flexibility to add more people (please enquire).

Located 20 minutes drive from the city centre, it is the perfect base from which to explore Edinburgh and surroundings or just sit around for a blether and a not-so-wee dram with family and friends.

The space

- Ground Floor -
Entrance hall: Panelling taken from the RMS Franconia, the ship used by Winston Churchill for the meeting with Roosevelt and Stalin in 1945 to discuss postwar reorganisation.

Old kitchen: Vaulted stone walls and ceiling; original massive fireplace with brackets. (Modern usable Kitchen on the 1st floor).

The Vaults/Games Room: 12m x 5m games room with pool table, table tennis, etc., can be set up for parties, dinners and other events.

WC: Antique toilet and sink; panelling from the RMS Franconia.

- First floor -
Pine Room: large, comfortable, cosy, pine-panelled; wood-burning stove.

Modern Kitchen: With induction hob, electric oven, microwave, bean to cup coffee machine, dishwasher, etc.

Dining room: Elegant room with Dining with table that seats 20 to 22 people. French empire-style decoration, marble and ormolu fireplace rescued from the SS L’Atlantique.

Chinese Room: Photographed by the National Museum of Scotland as a fine example of Neo-Chinoiserie, Inspired by the Prince Regent’s Brighton Pavilion. Panels, intricately and lavishly hand-painted with traditional Chinese imagery; colourful wooden dragon lamps; open fireplace with ornate mantelpiece.

Library: bookcases on every wall; reading nook; door to large spiral staircase up to the second floor.

Utility room: washing machine, dryer, storage, stairway and arched original door to courtyard.

- Second floor -
There are 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms on the second floor in the main house, sleeps up to 10 people:

Ashray: Main suite with king size four poster bed; walk in wardrobe; fireplace; working shutters; large en-suite bathroom painted with Kandinsky-style murals; large jacuzzi bath; shower; fireplace.
NicNevin: large bedroom decorated with William Morris wallpaper in Arts and Crafts style; king size bed; fireplace; working shutters; en-suite bathroom: black and white-tiled, with bath and shower.
Ghillie Dhu: large bedroom; king size four poster bed; fireplace; working shutters.
Shared shower room: travertine tiled shower room.
Selkie: king size bed; fireplace; working shutters.
Brownie: king size bed; working shutters.

Children are very welcome and most of our bedrooms are flexible. Please discuss your requirements with us and we can arrange for cots if desired.

The Cottage
There are 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom on the first floor of the cottage, sleeps up to 4 people:
Sonas: king size bed; wood burning stove, rare mullioned window overlooking the garden.
Caim: king size bed; bright, cosy. Shared bathroom: shower.

Accessibility

Witchmere Castle is a 15th century castle, built as a fortified tower. Unfortunately it is not accessible and is unlikely to be so in the near future. There are no bedrooms on the ground floor and no toilet on the same floor as the reception rooms. All reception rooms are up at least one flight of steps. There is the possibility of hiring a stair climber to transport a wheelchair up and down stairs. If this is something that you are interested in, please contact us.

Directions

Driving out of Edinburgh on the A1 take the exit for the Edinburgh City Bypass (A720). At the roundabout take the first exit signposted to the B6415 and Service Station. Go past the Service Station and turn left. Follow the B6415 through the houses at Old Craighall. The entrance gates to Monkton House are on the left hand side.
